1989-1990: Eastern Germany experiences the peaceful revolution. The peaceful revolution began as smaller groups of resistance within Germany but evolved to large-scale protests and public outcry against the Soviet Union.
November 1989: Dismantling of the Berlin Wall begins to occur. 1990: The end of the German Democratic Republic and Soviet Union control. As a result of the shifting political climate of Dessau, formerly within East Germany, the city loses 25% of its population. mid 1990s: Urban renewal efforts begin in the city of Dessau. The Circle and Reformed Bauhaus are a few groups who presented at design competitions held for Saxony-Anhalt, but many of these design concepts never were developed or completed within the city. mid 1990s-2000s: The city of Dessau slowly begins to restore the historical downtown area. 2007: Dessau merges with city of Roblau to combat population decline. 2010: The first International Building exhibition Urban Redevelopment Saxony-Anhalt is held. These exhibitions bring together designers and scholars from around the world to address urban problems in a contemporary holistic way. The Saxony-Anhalt is the first of three IBAs being held, with the Hamburg IBA occurring in 2013 and Berlin in 2020. [1] [2] [3] |
