General Historical and Background Context Modern-day Dessau is a city plagued by constant decline. However, in the past Dessau was an influential industrial powerhouse that was considered a thriving central hub of architecture and art. While Bauhaus did indeed contribute to one of the many peaks of Dessau, its absence was not the single factor that lead to the city’s decline. The Dessau of today is considered a “dying city” due to the social, political, and cultural changes that occurred over the course of the World Wars, the Bauhaus era, and the GDR period.
